How to make a felt board

How to make a felt board
To use our felt products you are going to need a felt board. We offer very reasonably priced hand-made felt boards on the web-site, but you might like to try making your own. Read below for instructions.

Materials

Some kind of stiff board. Plywood, heavy cardboard, or coroplast. We use coroplast (In Japanese this is called Pladon and is available from many DIY stores such as Ayahadio.)

Felt The piece of felt needs to be larger than the board by about 5 cms.

Spray adhesive. (Read the label to be sure it is suitable for felt).

Tape. Read the label to be sure it will adhere to felt. (In my experience, cheap packing tape is not satisfactory) Get high quality tape if you want it to stick!

Sharp scissors

Now let’s make the board.

Step 1
Place the board on the felt and make sure it is centered with the sides of the felt extending by several centimeters.

Step 2
Lift the board off and spray the back of the felt with the spray adhesive, next place the board on the felt again, centered as you want it.

Step 3
Fold over the edges of the felt and glue these down on the back of the board. Do this in a way so that the 4 corners form “ears”.

Step 4
Now use the scissors to cut off the extra ‘ears’. Try to make this cut as close to the board as you can. This will give you nice flat corners on the back of the board. (Try to do your best, but remember the back of the board doesn’t need to be perfect. It is the front that people will be looking at.)

Step 5
Use the tape to tape down the 4 edges of the felt on the reverse side of your board. The spray adhesive should hold the felt by itself, however the tape provides extra reinforcement and helps give the board a clean finish.
